I've been here many times with my family when we come visit Coos Bay. Every time we come here, everyone in my family loves their food. My favorite item is the Bento Box. It's like getting a little bit of all of my favorite things. Chicken teriyaki, vegetable tempura, rice, and potstickers! I also really like the yakisoba noodles. Delicious! The service is always great (maybe a bit slow sometimes, but that's when they're really busy!) , and the staff are very friendly.

So I've been here more times then I can count. Everything from the teriyaki bowl,to the Hawaiian poke, Chef special noodles, subing tofu for any meat is a delight. They have a great variety of beers and wines but don't forget the sake! And If you have a sushi fetish this is your place!

We LOVE the sushi here! Please note that this review is entirely about the sushi. We have yet to try any of their other offerings. I am a newbie resident of Oregon, and this is already a steady favorite of mine. We first heard about the sushi from my hubby's brother, then his cousin, and then his cousin's wife. (Hubby and family are from here) Third chime's a charm - pardon the pun - so after not THAT much prodding, we decided to give it a go for the first time while vacationing here in January of 2013. We left full and very satisfied. One year later, while already an official resident, I asked to be brought back to Sumin's as my first eating out restaurant. Still the same great feeling of sushi satisfaction. Today on this brisk February night, we went again. Allow me to describe our dinner. We walked in and it looked quite bustling. A couple families and a few couples already mid-meal. There are only a few tables by the sushi bar, if memory serves me right there are nine tables? Or 10? But there were only two available. We grabbed a booth and the waitress who was at a table greeted us and quite promptly brought some water and menus (quick considering she was alone). See pictures for our selection. 1. I love the Sumin's combo... Indecisiveness's best friend. Our #1 had half a coos bay roll with an assortment of nigiri: mussel, egg, smoked salmon, tuna, scallop, and tako. Yum. I'd definitely try the other numbers next time. 2. Alaska roll - love salmon? Check. 3. Rainbow roll - classic sushi lover's favorite. I would try to describe the flavors but you know, to each his own. You have to try it to find out.

This place delivers a fantastic meal every time. Their servers go above and beyond what's expected of a server. They're very knowledgable about not only their menu, but the origination of the ingredients used. A nice little neighborhood restaurant.

I think I picked the wrong time to visit. From what I gathered listening to the staff talking amongst themselves, home coming was later that day, so the staff seemed preoccupied with how busy they were going to be. Sushi was OK. I had the chef's special, but it didn't taste "clean". Each piece tasted a little like the other, like it all mingled together, despite eating a bit of ginger in between each. Service was good. It wasn't busy when I was in, maybe 4 other tables and a couple people waiting for take-out. The waitresses were attentive and explained the different specials. I'd go back again

Food tasted good, great service. The spicy chicken dish wasn't spicy.. i was dissapointed.

Went in for dinner tonight and have to admit I was expecting better. The service was friendly and the location quaint. The food on the other hand wasn't that great. I'm right by the ocean and usually that means fresh tasting seafood and while the sushi was good enough, but it certainly did not taste super-fresh. My scallop roll tasted of mayo ... at least I think that's what it was and my rainbow roll had little flavor other than crab - even though it was covered in fish. Maybe next time I should try the Korean ... if there is a next time.

While the service is wonderful with kind, friendly and attentive servers and sushi shokunin are amazing I have to say I have tasted better. In fact I dined here several years ago and the quality was much better. The ginger is the same color as the ginger you would find in Safeway's Sushi kit you get in the deli ( pale in color not pink all, but it appears beautiful to the eye. I would recommend ordering a selection of your liking. I got the chefs special and it was not the best. I will say again the people here are amazing and the atmosphere is such.

For my recent experience, I just happen to drop in on probably one of the busiest nights ever in Coos Bay. Most if not all of the restaurants seemed filled with patrons. Perfect opportunity to observe how the restaurant truly operates on a full night. With that said... Service did seem rather slow but that was only due in fact that this restaurant and it's size can only accommodate so many patrons at a time and another factor that does play in is the phone orders and deliveries that Sumin's have to meet. When the restaurant is full, especially on the rare occasion that the whole town is pretty busy, do expect quite a wait but it's well worth it and there is a good reason why. For Sumin's, it's quality over quantity that still makes this place a stop in as the sushi chefs take great pride in making their sushi. After receiving my order of the regular Sushi and Sashimi combo, it still had that fresh taste and the presentation was simple highlighting the sashimi. Despite a demanding service, I do have to mention that the staff held themselves high as they still pushed through the night where some servers might break down on such a stressful dinner service. They maintained control of the kitchen and everyone's orders were received in a reasonable manner eventually catching up and successfully ending the night with customers leaving satisfied. In sum, I'd still recommend a stop in for this restaurant as it still holds its consistency in the quality of the food and sushi that this family makes but stand by for a lengthy wait should you walk in on a pretty busy night.

My cousin and I stopped in to Sumin's for sushi while driving up the Oregon Coast. Red (our server) was awesome and very friendly! She took a few minutes to talk to us about the local culture and how Coos Bay is on a slant. We had a great time at Sumins and in Coos Bay, thanks to Red for serving us some excellent sushi!

Service was good, and the coos roll is great! Enjoyed everything - I will definitely be coming back. One of my new favorite places in town to eat! Really good.

This place is AMAZING! The sushi is fresh and crafted with care into a beautiful presentation that is as pleasing to the eye as it is to the palate. The sushi and nigiri combo is $10 and it's enough to fill you up with left overs! The miso soup is PERFECT and the sauces are spot on...ask for the bulgogi sauce with EVERYTHING! It literally dances on your tongue. The service is friendly and they make you feel right at home. All of the food is prepared with love and it shows. Do yourself a favor and eat here, you can thank me later.

This was my first time trying this place, but it came very highly recommened by a few coworkers. The miso soup was very good. The cucumbers and sprouts were good. I ordered the #2 Lunch Bento. There was quite a bit of food. The tempura vegetables were lite and flavorful. the california roll was quite good as was the rice and potstickers. I would recommend Sumin's and will return

Cucumber salad. Miso soup and sprouts Salad. The cucumber salad was chunky. I prefer it sliced thinly but flavor was good. The OMG sushi....I ordered it based other reviews....was average I found the staff very accommodating. When I mention that the sliced ginger tasted a bit off, they opened a bag from a different vendor that was much better and thanked me for brining it up. I can't say enough about the owner and waitress. They were wonderful. I would go again.

The food here is pretty good. Their hot and sour soup is the best! They have really good pork chow me in and sweet and sour chicken. The service could be better. The waitresses take forever to take orders and refill waters. They offer take out so if your in a rush that's your best bet.

A solid 3.5 stars. I had the Spicy Chicken combination lunch special, with brown rice ($1 extra). It came with a pretty big portion of chicken (mixed white and dark meat, some skin), a huge portion of brown rice (2 cups?), and a pretty big chunk of stir fry veggies, all served on an iron oblong plate that kept the food hot for the entire meal. The sauce was pretty good, though was far more sweet than spicy. The stir fry veggies were plenty greasy, and consisted of mostly bean sprouts, but also had carrot slivers, bamboo shoots, a couple of small broccoli pieces, onions, green onions, and mushroom slices. My partner had the Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup, which she ordered as "very spicy". It had a lot of ingredients, but for a reason she wasn't able to articulate it wasn't entirely to her liking, though in the end she did enjoy it, as did I. Excellent service, too.

This is one of my most absolute favorite places in Coos Bay. Growing up whenever my parents asked me where I wanted them to take me for my birthday or a special occasion, I would always say Sumin's. Now I live in Seattle and whenever I go back I always tell my parents I want to go out one night to Sumin's.

Let me start off by saying that I have been here a few times and food has been par and service in the middle as well. Today though the food started out very good, service was excellent. However about half way through my soup I found about a 12" long black hair. I notified the waitress and she promptly brought me another cup. We finished our meal and the check came. Here is where the frustration started; it took about 10 minutes to get my credit card back . There was no attempt at a "here is a discount for the massive hair in your soup". No further apology. I got the feeling that; maybe this happens often?

Stopped in here after walking out of the Thai next door becuz it was so HOT the sweat was trickling down my back. Walked in here. Front door open. Ceiling fans turning. Nice & cool. AND had great food to boot. I had the bulgoghi. Asked for soup & a salad, no rice. Miso soup w tons of tofu. Salad w a miso dressing. Mmmmmm gooooood. The bulgoghi was tasty & came on a sizzling platter w a pile of sliced veggies. Very good food. Very good service.

The best place for sushi & cooked dishes in town. Always fun to sit up at the sushi bar while the owners put the rolls together. A nice small family run business with high standards. The Mongolian beef is delicious!

  • Keith A.

Absolutely delicious. I'd say that their teriyaki bowl is their signature dish, though most people just opt for chicken to go with their choice of rice or noodles. In reality, the best option is their spicy beef bowl, and ask for an ample portion of their teriyaki sauce, for it's truly the best in town. Their eggrolls are deep-fried tubes of awesomeness, and my best friend swears by their sushi (which you can even get deep-fried!). The service is fantastic and the family-owned business deserves your dollars. Help support local businesses, and be sure to tip generously to the hardworking staff that helps make it a dinner/lunch-worthy option day in and day out.

I've loved Sumins for 10+ years and make it a point to visit nearly every time I'm back in the hometown. When I was a Junior at MHS, my buddies and I used to cut class to go pick up teriyaki chicken rice bowls, which we'd then take back and eat in the back of our trig class, haha... we never got in trouble, but even if we had it would've been worth it. I don't know what it is about that teriyaki sauce, but it's SOOOOO good and I've only been able to find something similar in one other restaurant (at Rascals on Bellflower in Long Beach, CA). We came here a lot when school was out, too... great vibe and the owners have always been super awesome (i don't know if they've changed over since 2002). Other tasty items... the lemon chicken, the pot stickers, that little cucumber + rice vinegar salad they bring you, bbq pork... and the sushi is pretty decent, too.

I would've had it rated 4 stars a few years ago when I lived in CB. But since I've moved to Eugene it's slipped down A LOT in my eye. 10 years ago this place was the best....but as time went on it has let itself slip a lot. Service has slowed down, and the sushi went to hell. Fish is warm, rolls are loose and fall apart, the wasabi was good haha I do have to say the only thing that gets 2 stars is their chicken teriyaki. Its pretty tasty...when served warm.

I eat here at least once a month and always get the chicken teriyaki bento box. I love it and so haven't tried much else on the menu. Their hot and sour soup beats all the other restaurants that serve it in Coos County by a country mile. The bento box is a lot of food so go in hungry and you'll leave well fed and happy. The weekday waitress is a super friendly hard working lady who makes me a smile when I see she is working. Not easy serving in two separate rooms but she does it and does it well.

A lot of co-workers recommended this place, plus there was a sign out front advertising a $1 nigiri sushi special. How could I not try this place out? I came in just before 1500, the end of their lunch service. The restaurant was mostly empty, no one was at the sushi bar and only three other tables were occupied. the waitress promptly brought me a menu, ice water, and hot tea. It was a good start, but unfortuanteyl, it was kind of downhill from there. There was bulgolgi on the menu, so I figured this was Korean owned place. I opted for the bento box b (chicken teriyaki, fbbq pork fried rice, pot stickers, half a california roll, vegetable tempura, and soup). I ordered 2 pieces of hamachi, two peices of tai, and 1 piece of salmon from the limited nigiri menu. After she took my order, my miso soup was quickly brought out. The soup had good miso flavor, wasn't too salty and had lots of tofu in it. After I finished the soup, I expected my sushi to be brought out, so I sat there, first finishing my tea, then my water, and waited. I noticed the sushi chef wasn't behind the counter I figured he was on a break, so I continued to wait. After about 20 minutes the sushi chef had returned and was yucking it up with some regulars that had sat down at the bar and the waitress finally came around and refilled my drinks. I waited a few more minutes before my order was finally brought out, followed shortly with my sushi order. I quickly attacked the sushi I was so hungry. Wow, I guess I shouldn't have expected so much for a buck. The rice was just regular white rice, not vinegared or seasoned, not warm, and not fluffy. It was densely and tightly packed and flavorless. The fish wasn't bad yet, but it definitely wasn't the freshest. Next was the bento box. The california roll was nothing special. The potsickers/gyoza were deep fried and the skins were a little chewy. The filling was nothing memorable, but they did provide a dipping sauce. The vegetable tempura was below average, the batter was a little too thick and some of the vegetables were burned. No tentsuyu, I guess I was supposed to use the gyoza sauce. The fried rice was okay, some of the bbq pork was a little old (ie hard as a rock). I think the bento would have been better if they gave white rice to help adsorb some of the teriyaki sauce. The chicken was good though. After finishing, I just wanted to get out of there, but the waitress was talking to another employee who had come in on his day off while she was waiting for her replacement to start. By the time that happened, a bunch of new customers had come in and so the new waitress had to help them, get their orders, etc, so more waiting. Finally get the check, put my card down, and more waiting. I feel a little bad for the waitress, she had several tabels to take care of and the sushi chef was doing nothing but socializing with his friends at the sushi bar. My total bill for 5 pieces of nigiri and the bento box with tip was $18.35. I really wanted to like this small Japanese/Korean restaurant, but after my experience I just couldn't. Average to below average food with failing service. If the sushi chef is the owner he really should take some pride in his restaurant, help out the waitress, and try to improve customer service.

The place was dirty to start with....my menus they gave me were sticky and full of food....I ordered a sushi...certainly not the best I ever had but came with 2 small healthy tasty salads. The staff was terrific- the music was loud classic rock...not what you want in a Sushi place... I saw dust and clutter all over... Place needs a good cleaning. Got eel sauce for my sushi- came hot hot hot...weird!

The food is consistently good; however, they are consistently understaffed as far as wait persons go, just one. Be prepared for a longer visit (as in, sometimes you can't get in/out on your 1 hour lunch) during busy times, or better yet, phone your order in ahead! They recently did some cosmetic interior updates, which I hope include the bad benches that had big holes you'd fall into.

This is one of my all time favorite places in Coos Bay. My co-workers and I have this as our regular meeting place, and have for years. They are excellent for lunch or dinner, and I've always had consistently wonderful food here. Hopefully they've opened up the other side more, as seating was pretty cramped there for awhile. The gal during lunch was awesome, in spite of really needing help during the busy time. My favorite dish is the Salmon Teriaki (I believe it's Lunch Special #8). It comes with a japanese salad and some steamed rice (or fried; your preference) + miso soup. I simply can't get enough of this. And I love that they give extra sauce. I just know not to eat it right before giving blood, LOL (made my blood pressure jump from the extra salt I guess ... tho it was WELL worth it :)) I still have intense cravings for this, even 2600 miles away now.. While Sumins themselves do not deliver, they are in the network of food places that are accessible from Dial-in-Delivery: dial-in-delivery.com/dia…

If I lived nearby I would be here daily! The staff, food and speedy service are all excellent. I came in with three other hungry guys and sat st the sushi bar.. Keep in mind, they also had other customers in there as well.. Not one bit did they slow down, stop being friendly or accurate.. Now to the most important part, the food. Like I said before... If I could eat here daily, I would.

Pretty good Asian fare for a town with 12 Asians total. This restaurant is the pick of the litter when it comes to Asian food in Coos Bay, they were voted the best South Coast Asian Restaurant for 2009 by the local paper. But that is like being voted the best oral hygiene at an Ozark family reunion. The seating is cramped, and very limited. The service is somewhat remiss, but it helps if you speak Korean. The food was actually fairly good they have a pretty good Sushi menu and the non-sushi choices are fairly expansive. Good enough that my better half and her sister could order food and not complain about how much they wished they had gotten something else. But I did have sushi. Their nigiri was very good and their specialty rolls were also very good. I also ordered the sweet and sour chicken but was too full to eat it. It looked good and the old sister in law assured me that the taste met her expectations. Only food related faux pas was their edammame. Being Asian they should know that they do not need to steam the piss out of it. Most of the order was soft like eating boiled peas, quite a different textural experience from the edammame I am used to.

Nothing more I appreciate than consistency. This place is consistently good. In all our years of dining here, we've had ONE experience with a less than phenomenal server and the next time we went in... he was gone. Clean, friendly and the food is just YUMMY! I especially like it because unlike some places, there's incredible selections that actually taste good for non-sushi eaters like me. They have the freshest food in town. And who can't fall in love with this family? To know them is to love them.

The Korean dishes are of good quality given the area. However, they are not on the menu. So he sure to ask for it. Bul Go Gi (Korean BBQ) and the Bi Bim Bap are our usual favorites.

Ok, So I gave it another try, but it was worse this time around. I took my son with me and sat down and waited..and waited..and waited until finally we were waited on. My son ordered the orange chicken and I ordered the veggie stir fry. I took awhile to get our order, and when it finally came, it was luke warm not hot. My son's meal was covered in this fluorescent orange glaze that covered everything on the plate. Kinda scary, but he said it tasted ok. And my meal, well, kinda blah. I won't be going back.

Sat for 20 minutes waiting for them to take our order.. Didn't even get drinks. Needless to say do not go here if you want quick food and good service. Food was good. Just need better customer service.

Hmm...Interesting. For a place that is Asian fusion (Chinese, Korean, Japanese food), the sushi is ok considering what is available in the area. Ordered spicy tuna roll, rainbow roll, and maguro. The sushi rice is bland and super dry, and for some irritating reason, the chef thought it necessary to sprinkle our spicy tuna rolls with that ichimi seasoning (the chili powder that is usually sprinkled on udon soup)..what??? Why, I don't know. The staff is friendly though, and maybe give their other foods a try?
